martinsteinmann1Schloss Sommerhausen is proudly owned by the Steinmann family. While the oldest vineyard can be dated back to the year 1114, the Estate itself was founded in 1435. Johann Steinmann purchased the Estate in 1653. Since then the Steinmann´s have been in charge of one of the best wine estates in Franconia. With an experience of eleven generations they have specialized in the production of great and very great wines in the picturesque village of Sommerhausen near Würzburg.

Martin Steinmann devotes his work to the nature they have been entrusted with, and through hard work, endurance and passion, has further developed and improved the wine quality of Schloss Sommerhausen.

With a total of 28 hectares the estate  cultivates an impressive number of grape-varieties. Beside the classic varieties such as Silvaner & Riesling, a focus is on burgundy varieties such as Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir. But also aromatic grapes like Scheurebe, Gewürztraminer and Rieslaner are cultivated. The majority of vines are grown on steep southwest facing slopes like the Sommerhäuser Steinbach.

Classical varieties like Riesling and Silvaner are bottled in the traditional Bocksbeutel which is closed with the modern VINO-LOK. Entry level wines are also available in Bordeaux shaped bottles with a screw-cap.

A further focus of Martin Steinmann is the production of sparkling wines from Riesling and Pinot varieties. The wine is produced in the traditional “méthode champenoise”.  The bottles for second fermentation are stored in the basement of the old castle in Sommerhausen.
